Top 10 World Heritage Sites

1. Stonehenge, England


Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in the English country of Wiltshire.It is one of the most famous sites in the world,  composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones.Archaeologists have believed that the iconic stone monument was erected around 2500 BC.The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 Stonehenge was produced by a culture that left no written records. Many aspects of Stonehenge remain subject to debate. This multiplicity of theories, some of them very colourful, are often called the "mystery of Stonehenge".


2.Chichen Itza, Mexico


It is a large pre-Columbian archaeological site built by the Maya civilization located in the northern center of the Yucatán Peninsula,in the Municipality of Tinúm, Yucatán state, present-day Mexico.The Maya name "Chich'en Itza" means "At the mouth of the well of the Itza."It is the type of building you can imagine being filled with El Dorado's lost gold.

3.The Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls


The Old City is home to several sites of key religious importance: the Temple Mount and its Western Wall for Jews, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre for Christians, and the Dome of the Rock and al-Aqsa Mosque for Muslims.Today, the Old City is roughly divided into the Muslim Quarter, the Christian Quarter, the Jewish Quarter and the Armenian Quarter. . 4.Rapa Nui, Easter Island


 Easter Island is a Polynesian island in the southeastern Pacific Ocean. It is famous for its 887 extant monumental statues, called moai which was  created by the early Rapanui people. It is a World Heritage Site (as determined by UNESCO) with much of the island protected within Rapa Nui National ParkThe indigenous name of Easter Island, Rapa Nui is a volcanic, Polynesian island watched over by huge stone Maoi, eerie figures supposedly built to represent important ancestors of each clan that weigh hundreds of tons and rise 60 feet. Over 3,000 people live on the island today alongside the statues.

5.Vatican City, Italy


One of the most religious and beautiful cities on earth, the Vatican City is actually a landlocked, self-contained sovereign city-state with a population of 900.It is an ecclesiastical or sacerdotal-monarchical state, ruled by the Bishop of Rome—the Pope. Most amazing sites  inside the Vatican City is the Apostolic Palace, home of the Pope, including Raphael's Rooms, the Sistine Chapel and frescoes painted by Michelangelo.

6. Pyramids of Giza, Egypt


 Pyramids of Giza, is the oldest and largest of the three pyramid in Giza necropolis,it is the only one to remain largely intact among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The ancient necropolis consists of the Pyramid of Khufu, the Pyramid of Khafre, the Pyramid of Menkaure, and the Great Sphinx. The allure of the pyramids is undeniable.

7. Historic Centre of St. Petersburg, Russia


Historic Centre of St. Petersburg,is a city situated on the bank of river Neva in Russia. Saint Petersburg is also home to The Hermitage, the largest art museum in the world.A large number of foreign consulates, international corporations, banks and other businesses are located in Saint Petersburg. Created under the reign of Peter the Great, the city's cultural and historical past is etched across every piece of architecture with the World Heritage Site including monuments such as the Admiralty, the Winter Palace, the Marble Palace, and the Hermitage.

8. The Alhambra, Spain


A majestic palace on the border of Granada, the Alhambra was once the residence of Moorish kings, but it's now one of the world's largest open-air museums of Islamic architecture and a World Heritage Site.There are royal residential quarters, official chambers, a bathhouse, and a mosque, as well as a series of courtyards flanked by sweeping archways, columns and fountains inside the citadel complex .



9.Tikal


Tikal is the largest of Maya cities during the "Classic Era" over 1000 years ago.It is located in the archaeological region of the Petén Basin in what is now northern Guatemala.  Many beautiful buildings have been uncovered and many more are till remained to be discovered. Amongst the many Maya sites in Central America, Tikal is perhaps the most breathtaking ,because of the  impressive buildings which have been restored in an area with many more ruined buildings still enveloped by the jungle. The sight of the temples poking through the canopy is quite awesome.



10. Notre Dame de Paris, France


Notre Dame is a world heritage site steeped in history and characterized by its French-gothic architecture, natural-looking sculptures and beautiful stained glass windows.It is widely considered one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture in France and in Europe .
